Why today’s leaders need to be coaches?

Dr. Michael Heah, CEO, Corporate Coach Academy, Malaysia is known as The Father of Coaching in Southeast Asian region. He started with the statement that, coaching and training seems to be same or similar. But it is not, training focuses on skills development, coaching focuses on wiliness to change. Coaches are aids to identify someone’s inner strength and use it for betterment of his current situation.

We saw many types of coaches like football coach, cricket coach, balling coach, batting coach, health coach, life coach, business coach, career coach etc. Dr. Michael divided coaching into 4 major arenas i.e. Corporate / Leadership Coach; Business Coach; Career Coach; Life Coach etc. Besides these he also mentioned some sub-group of coaching i.e. family coach; spiritual coach; parenting coach; and religious coach etc.

A good coach must have academic and human characteristics; thorough academic training is necessary for a good coach; because coaching is a set of techniques to know a coachee, scratch and pinpoint his / her strengths and limitations; share his views to identify alternative options; assisting the coachee to select the best option.

He stated that, all the corporate leaders are guardians to his or her team; he must know strengths and weaknesses of each individual members of his / her team. He must advise, guide, train, direct towards betterment of the team members individually as well as achieve the team’s targets. Therefore every leader today should be a coach. They should undergo coaching sessions, achieve coaching competencies, apply in respective fields for better outcome of his position.

Benefits of coaching in workplace could be described as follows:
i. Engages Employees
ii. Decreases Employee Turnover
iii. Increases Productivity
iv. Creates Stronger Bonds
v. Better Management Skills
