Vaccine expert Rick Bright told lawmakers on May 14 that “2020 could be the darkest winter in modern history” if the U.S. does not quickly improve its response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. “The virus is here, it’s everywhere. We need to be able to find it, to isolate it and to stop it,” said Bright, the former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. "We will either be remembered for what we did or for what we failed to do to address this crisis.” Bright testified on Thursday before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s health subcommittee in a hearing dedicated to “protecting scientific integrity” of the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. In a whistleblower complaint filed last week, Bright said he was reassigned to a different position in late April for pushing back against the Trump administration’s virus response strategy.
