Clicking through e-commerce sites to get goods delivered to your doorstep could potentially be a way to raise money for road projects around the state.

On Tuesday, state lawmakers heard a proposal during a meeting of the Joint Transportation Committee to impose a fee on the delivery of merchandise purchased online. Andrew McLean of CDM Smith, a consulting firm, presented a report on a retail delivery fee that could apply to a wide list of items delivered by companies such as Amazon or UPS.

McClean said when a consumer makes an online purchase, they would also pay an additional fee that retailers would then pass along to the state. The fee would be added once to the overall order.
