Parenting

Ms. Shiela Brinosa Portillo, Founder, Mindful Moments, Philippines is a Certified Professional Life Coach. She expressed her views on parenting here in this interview. Actually; most of the parents are very busy with their professional engagements. May be a businessman father is busy with his business; a professional mother is busy with her career or a housewife mother is busy with her household activities. How much time do we allocate for our children? How much interaction do we do with them?

It is important to pass quality time with your children every day for having a loving, careful and affectionate relationship with them. Without Mindful Parenting, you may have communication gap with your children, day by day this communication gap may be resulted at generation gap. This generation gap may through you away from your children’s mind and loving relationship. Thus your children may be derailed from your family values, norms and detached from you.

Generation gap between parents and children may result as not taking care of parents, not providing attention to parents and many other social problems. Therefore every parent should go through this parenting session carefully and implement the tips in their daily life with the children.

Mindful Parenting is conceptualized as the practice of being present and aware in everyday interactions with children through paying attention without judgment as each moment unfolds. Ms. Shiela Portillo described 4 pillars of mindful parenting here in this discussion. These are (1) structure, means predetermined hierarchy of norms, values, ethics etc. of the family; (2) Concept, means roles, regulation, bindings and boundaries of the family, (3) Space, means listening from the children to understand their viewpoints, (4) Consistency, means maintaining continuous careful loving bondage with your children.

It is important how we are teaching our children? How much we are explaining the values, norms and attitude, rules & responsibilities to our kinds, do we have frequent interactions / dialogue with the kids? Are we listening to their views? How do we react or reply to their viewpoints? It is not always mandatory to react against each behavior of your children. You may take time, cum your emotions down and then reply to his / her actions. Criticism is the worst feedback you can give, appreciation and rewards could be fruitful tool to manage your children every day. Never advise your kinds to practice anything you do not practice in your life. Change yourself first before expecting their change. Transforming you do to I do.
