ONDC launched in Bengaluru! It is set to revolutionise the entire e-commerce and create an impact close to UPI. ONDC or Open Network for Digital Commerce is a new and super initiative by the Indian government. ONDC is a private non-profit company established by the government of India. This ONDC project aims to centralise online shopping by giving an equal opportunity to small retail businesses. It is a network based on open protocol and will enable local commerce across segments, such as mobility, grocery, food order and delivery, hotel booking and travel, among others, to be discovered and engaged by any network-enabled application.

The government rolled out its big initiative on 30th September, 2022, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) for the public in Bengaluru went live with its beta test. It has been launched under 16 pin codes. Consumers in Bengaluru can now shop from multiple categories of products and services from a single buyer application of their choice. To begin with, consumers can place their orders in two domains; groceries and restaurants through any buyer apps participating on the ONDC network. Currently, Mystore, PayTM, and Spice Money are available as buyer apps on ONDC.
With the help of ONDC, the government plans to help small retailers and create an alternative to dominant global giants. ONDC, a UPI of e-commerce, seeks to democratise digital or electronic commerce, moving it from a platform-centric model to an open-network. Through ONDC, merchants will be able to save their data to build credit history and reach consumers. It is expected to digitise the entire value chain, standardise operations, promote inclusion of suppliers, derive efficiencies in logistics and enhance value for consumers. All the retailers or businesses on ONDC will be visible on a single app. So, as soon as you search for any product all the options from small to big retailers will be visible. On ONDC, you will be able to compare basis price, delivery charges, estimated delivery time, etc. With ONDC E-commerce, you will be able to order from any platform as a consumer. With ONDC, the consumers will always have to give the lowest price.

How does ONDC work? The platform is powered to operate on two primary channels, namely buyer application and seller application. Buyers application helps consumers in searching and discovering products , creating orders, managing carts, getting special offers and confirming orders. Sellers application provides responses to initial search queries, ensures product availability on buyers app, handles dynamic pricing, and manages logistics and settlements. It is democratic, cost-effective and empowers buyers and small businesses.
