Hear Shai Oster explain the decision not to divest its cloud division is reflecting the declining situation of the Alibaba Group.
"Alibaba in so many ways exemplifies the story of China's private enterprise. they were the most successful, embraced by the government, and then they got too powerful and were cut down the size, And now what can they become, the government doesn't want you to be too profitable, right? Cause you're It's not harmonious society. On the other hand, they need Alibaba as a crucial infrastructure, right? It's Alipay and WePay is the banking system, they have millions and millions of merchants that they support. The government needs them alive. I don't know if they need them to thrive. Now, I never understood the plan to break up the company because I thought always the Alibaba story was about synergies. our value is that we're this Chinese Chaebol that has this and that. And then all of these things together create vast opportunities and synergies. So we own movie studios because we have the platform. After all, we have the ticket sales; because this and all of this will generate more value, right? And then to suddenly sell investors. Wait, we were wrong. We will unlock the value by selling all these parts." - Shai Oster
