The majority of the resorts, restaurants, and nightclubs that white Americans enjoyed were inaccessible to middle-class Black Americans due to racism in the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, there existed a unique location called Idlewild—a "Black Eden"—in the northwest Michigan woods. Black intellectuals, writers, doctors, and businesspeople discovered a haven here where they could relax and let go of the heavy burden of racism and segregation. Idlewild gained fame as a gathering spot for black intellectuals and became well-known across the country as a venue for seeing and mingling with some of the greatest black performers in history.
