The government is reportedly considering terminating the operating license of e-commerce website Taobao Taiwan, as part of a crackdown on Taiwanese business partners of Chinese online companies. Launched in October last year, Taobao Taiwan is officially an agent of a British company, but its main shareholder is Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.
The Economics Ministry is expected to make a decision next week, amid worries about Alibaba''s close ties with the Chinese government. Taobao users are also concerned that their personal information could fall into China''s hands once they register with Taobao Taiwan. Just last week, the government announced that starting Sept. 3, Taiwanese firms will be banned from providing business support to Chinese video streaming companies, such as the mainland''s streaming king iQiyi.
