Google is investing $1 billion to create partnerships and the future of news. Google is going to pay publishers to create news. What could go wrong?
Google Showcase is kind of like Google Reader with material design. It gives a tremendous AMP-like experience for readers. This new feature is available on Android, and it will roll out to other Google News apps, Google Discover, and even Search shortly.
New features will allow publishers to integrate timelines, bullets, and inner-linking with related articles. This will be a text-only update, and support for audio and video is coming later. The update features more editor governance and less A.I. generation, as is the current form of Google News.
This is rolling out now in Brasil and Germany. Other countries will follow as 200 publishers have already signed up for the program. This is an evolution of previous licensing agreements in place with news organizations. This is the first leg of a 3-year pilot program.
