Former United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz Talks About ‘Turnaround Time’

Oscar Munoz, the former CEO of United Airlines, is unpacking his own success story in his new memoir, 'Turnaround Time.’

As one of eight siblings, Munoz was raised initially by his grandmother in a small village in Mexico, and instilled with a love of family and community from a young age.

"I grew up in a large family, a large Mexican-American family. Everything is about 'la familia,’ and this is just an extended version of it," Munoz explains of his United Airlines 'family’.

Munoz says that support and encouragement from important people in his life made him always aim higher and push himself further.

"I am so deeply blessed to have found people along the way that have assisted me," he said. "From a guidance counselor in high school to many people along the process saw something in me and pushed me just a little harder to do something that I would have never done."

The title of his new memoir "Turnaround Time" refers to the efficiency at which an airplane lands and takes off for another flight. Munoz became CEO of United in 2015 and suffered a near-fatal heart attack just one month into the job. Employees and union leaders rallied behind Oscar during his medical emergency, and he continued to lead United until 2020.

Munoz remains involved in next-generation aviation, supporting initiatives like Boom’s new supersonic aircraft and Archer’s electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, both of which are being developed in partnership with United Airlines.
