China and the International Financial System: Session 2 | Banque de France

On Monday 13 December 2021, the Banque de France organised a conference on China and the International Financial System, in partnership with the ECB and CEPII. The event, which was part of the Eurosystem's China Expert Network, brought together more than 100 participants online.

After opening remarks given by the Banque de France Deputy Governor, Sylvie Goulard, the conference featured a panel session moderated by Livio Stracca (ECB) in which four renowned experts in China matters:

Alicia Garcia Herrero (Natixis, Bruegel), Christoph Trebesch (Kiel Institute), Raphael Auer (BIS) and Michel Aglietta (CEPII) discussed about China’s evolving financial landscape in the context of a broader transformation in its growth model.

The keynote speech was delivered by Eswar Prasad (Cornell, Brookings) and touched upon a wide range of issues from short and medium term growth challenges to the motivations behind the e-CNY (digital yuan) and its implications as well as the prospects for the renminbi to become a major international currency.

The programme also included three paper sessions focussing on the following themes: (i) internationalisation of the renminbi, (ii) China’s system innovation and connection, and (iii) green financial policies in China.
