“05 Steps to start an Online Clothing Store”
The following steps are in sequence and to be implemented one after the other
1: Decide your brand positioning and hero products
In retailing brand, perceptions play a very important role
Example: when you think of premium you think of clothing brands like
Louis Vuitton.
Dolce & Gabbana.
Givenchy.
Armani, and similar
when you think of affordable fashion, you think of
H&M
Uniqlo
Zara
and similar
when you think of sports clothing, you think of
Nike
Adidas
Under Armour
and similar
This is because these brands have built this perception of their brand identity in our minds
Thus, decide your positioning as premium, affordable, or a price point and discounted brand
2: Market Research
Make a list of your direct competitors in your country
Direct competitors are brands with similar brand positioning where their products and pricing are similar to yours
Now conduct market research on each of these competitors
Market research shall help you understand the following:
1. How many visitors does your competitor have?
2. Which are the top visiting pages of their website?
3. Top keywords driving traffic to their website
4. Top sources which are driving traffic? Is it driven by social media, google, and how many are directly visiting their website?
5. Overall traffic trend? Where is the traffic coming from?
And much more, which can actually help you understand your competitors' strategy and also analyze what's working for them & what is not !!!
3: Make a business plan
More than 70% of online startups fail in the first 02 years of business because of financial mismanagement, as they do not plan their budgets across:
Operations
HR
Digital Marketing
Softwares
Inventory
Business Plan will help you analyze the investments required, your breakeven sales, and the ROI
4: Sales & Operations Plan (also called S&OP)
This includes the following
Which platform should be used to develop the website?
Which software must be used for Customer service and Inventory management
How many employees to recruit and their roles
How will the customer journey be on your website?
How should the supply chain be planned, right from sourcing, warehousing, and last-mile delivery
How will you get visitors to your website?
How much will you spend on each social media channel like Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Snapchat, Tiktok, etc
5: Standard Operating Procedures
An online business cannot run in an unorganized way !!!
If you are unorganized then it shall lead to:
Delay in deliveries
Out-of-stock situations
Delay in customer response
Poor product quality
Employee unhappiness (do not forget, they are also your internal customers. One unhappy employee can lead to many unhappy customers)
So, have your basic SOPs in place especially for processes like Order Management, Last mile delivery, investor and customer services, since they have a direct impact on your customer happiness
